Piraeus Bank systems “blocked” the perpetrators

Today, in various press releases refer that Ukrainian hackers “broke” Piraeus Bank customer’s accounts and transferred big amounts of money to their own bank accounts. However, such a “broke” condition to the bank’s accounts does not exist.

There is a charge from a customer of the bank that did not recognize 2 money transfers, totaling 17 thousand Euros, from his account due to interception by a third person. This incident has no relation with the security issues and systems of the Bank, as the Police stated.

The Piraeus Bank located the problem immediately and blocked all the money transfers from the accounts in order to avoid possible loss for the customer and at the same time informed the Police for the incident since September 15, resulting to the arrest of the perpetrators that stole the specific amount of money.

Thus, what is mentioned to a part of the Press cannot be related with a weakness in the security systems of Piraeus Bank. For this reason today the Police give to the whole matter the appropriate dimension.

Based to the aforementioned incident Piraeus Bank state the following:

There is by no means violation of Piraeus Bank’s information technology systems, as the applied security measures make them practically inviolate. It should be noted that the security code of each customer is encoded, including systems that make the access to the accounts impossible either out or in the Bank. Piraeus Bank has made large investments and continues to invest for the security and protection of its systems, according to the international standards.
